Regenerate, Stop, Report: The Buttons Under a Companion's Reply

By The Fellowi Team · · 5 min read

A smartphone lies on a wooden desk beside a steaming cup of tea and a lit reading lamp, with a thumb hovering over its screen where a chat thread glows softly in the warm evening light.

Most of a companion chat is typing and reading. But there are four small controls around it, and knowing what each one does saves a lot of arguing with a reply you did not want. This is the short manual: one button per section, what it does, and when it is the right move.

Three of them live under every finished reply from your companion and show up when you hover over it: Copy, Regenerate and Report. The fourth, Stop, takes the place of the send button while a reply is still being written.

Regenerate: another take on the same moment

What it does. It throws away the latest reply and asks your companion to answer your last message again. Same companion, same conversation, same message from you, a fresh attempt at the answer. The new reply is written from scratch, so it can take a different angle, a different tone or a different length.

When to press it. When a reply is fine as language but wrong for the moment: too long, too flat, a joke that missed, a scene that went somewhere you did not want. In a roleplay this is kinder to the story than correcting it in your next message, because the wrong turn never becomes part of the plot. The roleplay guidesays the same thing from the storyteller's side.

Three details worth knowing:

  • It always redoes the latest reply. The button appears under older replies too, but whichever one you press, it is the most recent reply that gets replaced. An older reply is already history, and the conversation has moved on from it.
  • It does not count as a message. Message limits count the messages you send, and Regenerate sends none. It is checked against the same limit, though, so if you have run out, it waits too. How the limits work is in the message limits explainer.
  • It is not there for photos and videos. When you press Photo or Video in the chat, that is a request rather than a reply, so it has no Regenerate button. Ask again instead.

Stop: when a reply is going the wrong way

What it does. While your companion is writing, the send button turns into Stop. Press it and the reply ends where it is. Whatever was already written stays in the chat, and your companion treats it as said: the next reply follows on from it.

When to press it.When you can see by the second line that this is not the reply you want, and you would rather steer than read to the end. Stop, then write the correction yourself (“wait, go back, she never opened the door”). If you would rather the half-reply did not exist at all, let it finish and press Regenerate instead.

Try again: when nothing arrived

This one only appears when something went wrong: a reply that did not come through, or a connection that dropped halfway. Your own message is already saved at that point, so Try again does not send it twice; it only asks for the reply again. If replies stall often, why a reply sometimes stalls explains what is happening on our side.

Copy: keep the line

Copy puts the text of a reply on your clipboard. People use it for the obvious things: a line worth keeping, a piece of advice to paste into a note, a paragraph of a story to continue somewhere else. It copies the words only, not photos.

Report: when a reply should not have been written

What it does. One tap flags that reply. There is no form to fill in: the text of the reply goes to the team that runs Fellowi, together with the fact that you flagged it, and the button changes to Reported.

When to press it. When a reply is not just a bad take but wrong: it crosses a line it should not, insists on something false about the product, ignores a boundary you set, or reads as broken. That is a different thing from a reply you simply did not like, which is what Regenerate is for. If your companion left the character altogether, when your companion breaks character explains why that sometimes happens on purpose.

For a problem you want to describe in your own words, such as a button that does nothing or a chat that will not load, use the flag icon at the top of the chat. It opens Report an issue with a text box, and it reaches the same team.

What none of these buttons can do

  • Edit what you sent. There is no edit button for your own message. If you sent the wrong thing, the honest fix is a new message that corrects it.
  • Reach further back than the last reply. Regenerate works on the latest reply only. To change something said ten messages ago, say so in plain words; your companion can pick it up from there.
  • Change who your companion is. A new take is still the same character, with the same personality and the same rules. The hard limits hold on every take, so pressing Regenerate again and again is not a way around them.
  • Start a conversation with support. A report is read, but nobody answers it inside the chat.

And if what you want is a clean slate rather than a different reply, that is a bigger step: Delete chat in your chat list erases the conversation and everything that companion remembers about you, for good. The companion stays in the catalogue, so you can start again whenever you like. What is kept and what goes is laid out in your chat data, explained.

Questions this post answers

Does pressing Regenerate use up one of my messages?

No. Message limits count the messages you send, and Regenerate sends none. It is checked against the same limit, though, so once you have run out it waits until the limit resets or your plan changes.

Can I regenerate an older reply, not the last one?

No. Whichever reply you press it under, Regenerate redoes the most recent one, because the conversation has already moved on from the older ones. To change direction further back, say so in your next message.

What happens when I report a reply?

One tap flags it, and the text of that reply goes to the team that runs Fellowi. You do not get a reply in the chat; for a problem you want to describe, use Report an issue in the chat header.
