Your AI Companion Chat Data: What Is Kept and What You Can Delete

By The Fellowi Team · · 7 min read

A tidy home desk in soft morning light with a closed laptop, an open notebook and pen, a phone with a dark screen and a steaming mug of tea.

Most people never ask where their conversations go until the evening they have said something they would not say to anyone else. Then the question arrives all at once: who can read this, how long does it sit there, and can I make it go away?

This is the plain inventory. It describes what the app does today, including the part that is missing, because a privacy page that only lists the good news is not worth reading.

What one evening of chat leaves behind

Three kinds of thing. First, the messages themselves, yours and your companion's, stored so the chat is still there when you come back. Second, durable memories: short facts a companion decided were worth keeping, like your sister's name or the job you are dreading. Third, once a conversation gets long, a rolling summary of the older part, so the companion does not lose the thread when early messages fall out of view.

To write a reply, your message text is sent to a chat model provider; there is no mode where a reply is produced on your device. Conversation content does not go into our application logs or analytics, and it is not used to train models without a separate, explicit opt-in. The one route by which a person on our side sees a message is a report: when a message is flagged, an excerpt goes to the channel the team monitors so someone can act on it.

The memory page is the part you can read

Settings, Memory lists every memory your companions have saved, newest first, as one list for your whole account. Each one has a delete button, and there is a button to delete them all. A removed memory stops being used from the next message; nothing has to be retrained.

It is worth opening once a month even if nothing feels wrong. A memory extracted slightly off - a joke stored as a fact - quietly bends every later conversation. How companion memory works explains what gets picked up and what never does; sensitive details are filtered out before anything is saved. If you talk to one of the psychologists, their session notes are memories too and sit on the same page; what the psychologists remember covers those.

What the memory switch does, and what it does not

At the top of the Memory page is a switch. Turned off, companions stop saving new durable memories and stop pulling the saved ones into their replies. That is real, and it is the right switch if you want each evening to start closer to blank.

What it does not do is stop the conversation being stored. Your messages are still saved, because a chat that forgot its own last line would be useless, and a long conversation is still summarised for that same conversation. The switch is about carrying facts forward, not about keeping nothing.

One practical catch: the switch applies to the companions you already have. A companion you add afterwards starts with memory on, so if you want it off everywhere, check the switch again after starting a new chat.

Taking a copy with you

In Settings, Privacy there is a download button. It produces one JSON file with your profile, your questionnaire answers, the profiles of your companions, your saved memories and your messages with their timestamps. No request to support, no waiting for an email.

It is a machine-readable file rather than a pretty transcript, so it opens best in a text editor or anything that reads JSON. Two things are not in it: the pictures and videos you generated, and the rolling summaries, which are working notes rather than something you wrote.

Deleting: what exists today

Here is the gap. At the moment the app has no button that erases one conversation on its own, or one group chat. The tools you do have are the memory controls above, and deleting your account.

Account deletion sits at the bottom of the Privacy page behind two clicks, with an optional question about why you are leaving that you can skip. When you confirm, you are signed out everywhere, your email is detached from the account so it can be used to register again, your saved memories are retired, and the files of every image and video you generated are wiped in the same step. The account cannot be signed into again, so the rest becomes unreachable immediately and is removed from primary storage on the schedule described in the privacy policy. It cannot be undone, so export first if you want a copy.

Pictures live in a different drawer

Photos a companion sends you in chat are part of that conversation. Images you make yourself in the image studio are separate: they sit in your generation history, they are kept only for a limited retention period, and deleting one from the history removes the stored file. Download anything you want to keep. Privacy when you generate images goes through that side in detail.

The limits, said plainly

A companion cannot answer without your words leaving your device. Memory off is not the same as nothing stored. A single conversation cannot be erased on its own from the app today. The export does not contain your pictures. And deleting an account makes everything unreachable at once but is not an instant shredder for every row.

None of that is hidden in a settings page you will never find; it is all here, and in the policy. If you are still deciding whether to trust a companion app with the things you would not say out loud, what to check before you pay is a good list to hold any of them to, us included.

Questions this post answers

Can I delete a single conversation with my companion?

Not from the app right now: there is no button that erases one chat on its own. You can delete saved memories one by one or all at once in Settings, Memory, and deleting your account takes everything out of reach.

Does turning memory off stop Fellowi from storing my messages?

No. The switch stops companions saving new long-term memories and stops the existing ones being used, but your messages are still stored so the chat can continue, and a long chat is still summarised for that conversation.

What is in the data export, and what is not?

A JSON file with your profile, questionnaire answers, companion profiles, saved memories and your messages. Pictures and videos you generated are not in it, so download the ones you want from your history.
