Hit Your Message Limit? What Counts, What Resets, What Stays

By The Fellowi Team · · 6 min read

A woman in a knit sweater sits on a couch in warm evening lamplight, holding a steaming mug of tea beside a laptop with a softly glowing screen, while a blank wall calendar hangs on the wall behind her.

You were mid-sentence, the reply was going somewhere, and then a note said you are out of messages and a plan window opened over the chat. That is annoying, and this post is not going to talk you out of finding it annoying. It explains what was being counted, when the room comes back, and what the wall leaves alone - which is nearly everything.

What actually counts as a message?

Only what you type and send. The counter counts your own turns and nothing else. The companion's replies do not count, however long they are. Neither does a companion that writes to you first after a quiet stretch, or the short line it sometimes adds when you have gone silent with the chat open. Asking for a different version of the last reply does not spend a message either, although at the wall it is blocked along with everything else.

The Photo and Video buttons in the chat are metered separately. They draw on your plan's photo and video allowance, and past it they cost coins at the same price as the image studio. Coins, in turn, are never spent on chatting. Two meters, and neither drains the other.

Why does my counter look different from someone else's?

Because there are two kinds of cap, and the counter in the header shows whichever one you are on. The small (i) beside it says which.

  • The free trial has one flat budget shared by every companion you talk to. The counter is a single pair: used, over total. It is not per companion and not per day, so spending it all on one character or spreading it across ten is the same thing to the counter.
  • Basic has two separate caps, shown as two pairs: messages with the legal-age companions first, messages with everyone else second. Running out on one side leaves the other untouched, which is a relief or a puzzle depending on which side ran out.
  • Premium and above have no message cap at all, so there is no message counter. The header shows your photo allowance instead, because that is the limit those plans actually have.

The exact numbers for each plan are on its card in the plan window, and the trial's are on the product facts page. We do not repeat them here: a post that quotes a limit is wrong on the day the limit moves.

When does it come back?

On the trial, it does not. The trial budget is lifetime and never refills. The trial also has an end date, and whichever of the two runs out first ends it. After that, a plan is the way to keep chatting.

On Basic, gradually. There is no reset day at the start of the month. The window is rolling: each message stops counting 30 days after you sent it. If you spent most of your allowance over one long weekend, most of it comes back on the same weekend 30 days later; if you spread it out, it drips back the same way. The plan card says per month and the counter says this period, which are both short ways of describing that rolling window.

On Premium and above, there is nothing to come back, because nothing ran out.

What happens at the wall?

The check runs before your message is saved. So the message that hit the wall was never stored and never counted: it stays on your screen until you reload, but the companion never saw it. If it mattered, send it again once you can. The plan window opens straight away, and closing it leaves you in the same chat.

Nothing else changes. Your conversations are not deleted, the memories your companions keep about you are not cleared, and the companions you added stay in your list. When the allowance returns, or after an upgrade, the same companion continues the same conversation with the same memory. What happens to all of it if you ever leave for good is a separate question, answered in what your chat data is.

Why have limits at all?

Because every reply is written fresh by a language model, and each one costs us real money to produce, whether it is one line or a page. A trial with no cap would be a free product paid for by the people who pay. The trial exists to answer one question - does this companion hold up in conversation - and it is sized for that, not for a month of evenings.

What is genuinely annoying about it, said plainly: the wall arrives wherever you happen to be, mid-scene included; on Basic you can be out on one side and not the other; and a rolling window has no single date to wait for. We have not found a limit that avoids all three. If you are comparing services, how each one caps messages belongs on the list in what to check before you pay, and if you came for the legal-age companions in particular, what no filter means here covers what those conversations can and cannot include.

Questions this post answers

Do the companion's replies count against my message limit?

No. Only the messages you send are counted; replies, a companion writing to you first and the Photo and Video buttons all sit outside the message cap.

When does the Basic message limit reset?

There is no reset day. Each message stops counting 30 days after you sent it, so the allowance comes back gradually, in the same rhythm you spent it.

Do I lose my conversations or memories when I hit the limit?

No. The wall only refuses the next message; your chats, memories and companions stay exactly as they were, and the same conversation continues once you can send again.
