Looking for an OpenArt Alternative? Here Is the Honest Arithmetic
By The Fellowi Team · · 7 min read

OpenArt is a large, well-made image platform, and plenty of people who generate pictures every day are glad to pay for it. It sells the way most of this category sells: a seat, billed every month, with an allowance of credits attached. We sell coins that you spend one picture at a time. Those are two different bets on how often you will press the button, and the honest answer to "which one is cheaper" depends almost entirely on that.
Everything below about OpenArt was read on their pricing page on 2 October 2026, from the individual plans. They price in US dollars and we sell in euros; we have not converted one into the other, because an exchange rate would add a number that moves every day. If their page reads differently by the time you get here, their page is right.
How OpenArt charges, as of 2 October
Four individual plans, each priced per seat per month, with a lower monthly price on annual billing. Starter is $14 a month, or $13 billed annually, for 4,000 credits a month; its card says up to about 4,000 images or about 50 videos, watermark-free. Plus is $34 or $27 for 12,000 credits, up to about 12,000 images or 150 videos. Pro, marked most popular, is $56 or $44 for 24,000 credits, up to about 24,000 images or 300 videos. Wonder, marked best value, is $240 or $175 for 106,000 credits, up to about 106,000 images or 1,300videos, with priority support and a line that reads "Unlimited Creation".
Every plan lists access to more than 100 image, video and audio models, including the third-party models their cards list, along with consistent characters, personalized models you train yourself, One-Click Stories, an image editing suite and an MCP integration. The number of generations you can run in parallel rises with the plan. One difference between the cards matters for paid work: the Starter card does not list commercial use rights; the line appears from Plus upward.
Two things we could not read, so we will not guess at them. There is a "Start for Free" button, but the free allowance was not on the page we read, so this post quotes no free figure. And their FAQ asks "Do my monthly credits roll over?"; we did not read the answer. Read it before you buy, because the rest of this post turns on it.
How we charge
Fellowi Images sells no seat, and you do not need a subscription. You buy coins in packages, and each picture in the image studio costs a fixed number of them: a Standard picture is 40 coins. Coins stay in the wallet until you spend them, so there is no monthly allowance to use up. New accounts get 60 free coins once. No tier puts a watermark on the picture, and a render that fails gives its coins back automatically (what a failed generation costs you). Every current price and limit is on the product page, built from the code that charges, and the figures in this post come from that same code.
There is also a budget tier, priced at 1 in coins per picture. It is cheap because it is plain: JPEG only, one quality level, no prompt enhancement, no reference images, no choice of aspect ratio, and when the service behind it is overloaded the picture fails and the coins come back.
One picture, priced both ways
- OpenArt, by their own card's count, at full use of the allowance: Starter $0.0035 a picture billed monthly ($0.0033 annually), Plus $0.0028 ($0.0023), Pro $0.0023 ($0.0018), Wonder $0.0023 ($0.0017).
- Fellowi Standard: €0.239 a picture at the Starter package rate, €0.123 at Creator, €0.098 at Scale.
- Fellowi budget tier: €0.0060, €0.0031 and €0.0025 at the same three packages.
Read plainly: a seat used to the last credit is many times cheaper per picture than our Standard tier, and arguing with that would be arguing with division. Our budget tier comes much closer, with the limits above. Two caveats on their side. "Up to" is a ceiling, and the card does not say which model reaches it; the third-party models their cards list may use more credits per picture, and we did not price them one by one. And different models make different pictures, so these lines compare how each side charges, not whose picture is better. For the wider market, see what AI image generation actually costs.
Where the arithmetic turns around
Every figure on their side assumes the whole allowance gets spent. Unused credits are the hidden cost of any allowance: the seat bills the same whether you made 4,000 pictures that month or 30. Make 30 on Starter in a quiet month and each one cost $0.47, which you can set against the list above. If their credits roll over, the quiet month hurts less; that is the FAQ answer worth reading.
Coins have no month. Buy a package for a launch in October, spend half of it, and the other half is still there in January at the price per picture you paid. A package costs more per picture than a fully used seat; a seat costs more than a package in every month you do not use it.
What OpenArt does better
- Price per picture at volume. For someone who really spends a large allowance every month, far lower than ours, as the list shows.
- Range under one login. More than 100 image, video and audio models on one account. We run a much shorter list.
- Consistent characters and models you train. Personalized models built from your own images. We offer reference images per generation, which is lighter and not the same thing.
- One-Click Stories. A story from a single action; we have nothing like it.
- A full editing suite. Editing tools around the picture, where we mostly make the picture and stop.
- Parallel generations and an MCP integration. More jobs at once as the plan grows, and a way for AI agents to drive the platform directly.
- An unlimited top plan.Wonder carries an "Unlimited Creation" line; we sell nothing unlimited.
If you generate every day and would genuinely spend a big allowance each month, you are probably better off with them. We would rather say so here than have you find out after a top-up.
What we do differently
- No seat, nothing to waste. Occasional or bursty use costs only the pictures you make.
- Commercial use from the first coin. At any spend level, free coins included, with no share and no credit required (the commercial-use clause).
- Adult character generation for people of legal age, within our own rules (choosing a character generator).
- Private output. There is no public gallery; what you make is shown to you and nobody else.
- An API billed per call, from the same wallet (the images and video API), and video with sound in the same account.
And what we lack, in the same breath: no trainable models, no story builder, nothing like their editing suite, no team workspace, and finished files are kept for a limited time only (the window is on the product page), so download what you want to keep.
So which one
Daily and heavy, with a need for characters, stories and a hundred models: an OpenArt seat, probably one of the larger ones, and the per-picture price will reward you for it. A handful of pictures a month, a burst for a project, client work from the very first picture, adult characters, or an API you pay for per call: coins. We ran the same sums against Krea and Midjourney if you are weighing those too. Open the image studio; the price of the next picture is shown before you press the button.
Questions this post answers
Is Fellowi cheaper than OpenArt?
Not per picture if you use an OpenArt seat in full: by the image count on their own plan cards on 2 October 2026, a fully used allowance costs a small fraction of a Standard picture with us. Fellowi comes out ahead when credits would otherwise go unused, because coins are spent per picture and there is no seat to renew.
What does OpenArt do better than Fellowi?
One account across more than a hundred models, consistent characters, personalized models you can train, one-click stories, a full editing suite, parallel generations and an MCP integration for agents. For someone who uses a large allowance every month, its plans are also far cheaper per picture.
Does the OpenArt Starter plan include commercial use?
The Starter card on their pricing page on 2 October 2026 does not list commercial use rights; the line appears from Plus upward, so confirm with them before using Starter output for paid work. Fellowi allows commercial use of what you generate at any spend level, free signup coins included, with no share and no credit required.
