Looking for a Midjourney Alternative? Subscription vs Pay-per-Image, Compared Fairly

A top-down view of a light wooden cafe table in soft morning light, with a large nearly full latte cup beside a small espresso cup, a few coins, a face-down smartphone, a folded linen napkin, and a croissant on a small plate.

People search for a Midjourney alternative for three reasons, and they are different people. One does not want a monthly fee for something used twice a year. One wants to generate adult content and cannot there. One tried it, found the look too recognisable, and wants something that follows the prompt more literally. This post is for the first and second; the third is a matter of taste we cannot settle for you.

Everything below about Midjourney was read on their subscription plans page on 26 September 2026. Their prices change without telling us; if the numbers there differ from these, theirs are right and this post is out of date.

How they charge, as of today

Midjourney is subscription only. The page lists four monthly plans - Basic at $10, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 and Mega at $120 a month, each cheaper on an annual commitment paid upfront - and there is no free tier. Each plan comes with a fixed amount of "fast GPU time" per month (3.3 hours on Basic, 15 on Standard, more above), and from Standard upward an unlimited "relax mode" that generates more slowly. Extra fast hours are $4 an hour. Two lines in their terms matter for a buyer: images are covered by general commercial terms on every plan, but a company with more than $1,000,000 in annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega; and a "stealth" mode that keeps your images out of the public feed is Pro and above.

How we charge

Fellowi has no monthly fee for images. You buy coins, and each generation in the studio costs a fixed number of them depending on quality and options. The current prices and package sizes are on the product page, generated from the code that actually charges, so we do not retype them into posts. Two rules shape the real cost more than the list price: a generation that fails on our side refunds its coins, and a prompt refused before it runs is never charged - the full accounting is in what a failed generation costs you. Commercial use is allowed on every purchase with no revenue threshold and no separate licence; that clause is quoted in full in the commercial-use post. Nothing you generate is shown to other users.

The comparison that is actually fair

A flat fee against a per-image price only compares once you fix the volume, so fix it.

  • Heavy daily use. If you generate all day, every day, a Standard-or-above plan with unlimited relaxed generation beats any per-image price, ours included. The marginal image on their side becomes nearly free; ours never does. This is the case where they win outright.
  • Bursty use. Forty images this month, none for the next two. On a subscription you pay three months for one month of pictures, or you cancel and re-subscribe each time. With coins, the quiet months cost nothing and the coins you bought are still there. This is the case where pay-per-image wins, and it is most people.
  • Occasional use. A handful of images a year. Their cheapest plan is $10 for a month you will mostly not use; our smallest coin package is priced for exactly this person and does not expire at month end.

If you want to place yourself, count the images you made last month, then look at the coin cost per image on the product page and their plan price. The break-even is a number, not an opinion, and it moves when either of us changes a price.

What they do better

The house look. Midjourney images are recognisable across the internet because the model has a strong aesthetic of its own, and for many people that is precisely the point. A very large community shares prompts and settings, which makes learning faster. And a flat price has a psychological advantage no coin system can match: once paid, every extra attempt is free, so you experiment without counting. If any of those three is what you are buying, buy it there.

What we do that they do not

  • Adult content, for adults. Midjourney does not allow it. Our studio does, behind age gating, with hard refusals for anything involving minors or non-consent - the rules are in why generators refuse.
  • No monthly fee. Coins are the only thing you buy.
  • Reference images and edits as a normal part of the same price sheet - see editing with your own photo.
  • Private by default. There is no public feed and no paid tier to leave it.
  • Video with sound from the same coin balance, on the video page.

The honest close

We are not the better Midjourney; we are a different bargain. If the words "unlimited" and "that look" are why you are here, stay there. If the words are "no subscription", "adult" or "refund my failures", open the studio and spend the small package on something you actually wanted.

Questions this post answers

What is the main difference between Fellowi and a Midjourney subscription?

The billing model. Midjourney sells monthly plans with a fixed allowance of fast GPU time and, on higher plans, unlimited slower generation. Fellowi sells coins and charges per image, with no monthly fee, and refunds a generation that fails.

Is Fellowi cheaper than Midjourney?

It depends entirely on volume. Someone generating hundreds of images every day is better off on a flat plan with unlimited relaxed generation. Someone who wants a few dozen images some months and none in others pays less per image with coins, because there is no fee in the quiet months.

What does Midjourney do better?

A very distinctive house aesthetic, a large community, and a flat price that stops mattering once you generate constantly. If you want that look and you generate every day, it is the better fit and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
