A Kindroid Alternative for People Who Would Rather Not Build

A wooden desk in soft morning light with an open notebook of pencil sketches of faces beside a closed laptop and a smartphone.

From a distance most AI companion apps look alike. Kindroid and Fellowi stop looking alike the moment you sit down with them, and the difference is not a feature. It is where you start. Kindroid hands you a workbench: you write the backstory, shape the memories, design the voice, and a character comes out the other end. Fellowi hands you a gallery: companions who already have a job, a home town and a way of talking, and you pick one and say hello.

Everything we say about them below comes from their own public help pages, checked on 2026-09-25: subscriptions, in-app purchases, voice and calls and group chats. If you are reading this months later, check them again. Their prices move, and so do ours.

What they do better

Voice. This is the big one. Kindroid has voice messages, voice calls and video calls, and subscribers can design a custom voice from a written description or from recorded samples. Fellowi has no voice at all: our companions write, and send pictures and clips, and that is it. If hearing a reply is what you are after, you can stop reading here and go to them.

Apps. They are on the iOS App Store and Google Play. Fellowi is a website. It works in any phone browser and you can add it to your home screen, but there is nothing to download.

A free tier that does not run out. Their free users get unlimited messages on a smaller version of their model, plus a small selfie allowance and two characters. Our free trial is a fixed number of messages over a fixed number of days, both stated on the product facts page. It needs only an email, not a card, but if you want to chat indefinitely without paying, they are more generous.

Depth of building. Backstory fields, key memories, personas, a choice of older models, group chats of up to ten characters. If building is the fun part for you, their workbench has more tools on it than anything we offer, and our group chats are smaller.

Where the two are close

Memory. Both remember across conversations. Their pages describe a short term context, a medium term layer they call Cascaded Memory and long term recall, with the stronger versions reserved for subscribers. Ours keeps durable notes plus rolling summaries of past conversations, pulls the relevant ones into the chat, and lets you see what was saved and delete it. How either feels after three months is not something an article can prove; the mechanism behind ours is in how AI companion memory works.

Pictures in chat. Both send them. Theirs are selfies, with an allowance and extra credits sold separately. Ours are photos within a monthly allowance that depends on the plan, and the chat has a Photo and a Video button for asking directly; past the allowance, a picture or a clip costs coins.

Group chats. Paid only, on both sides. How ours work is in group chats with AI companions.

Where Fellowi is different

Someone is already there

The gallery is the front door. Every companion arrives with a profile and a life of their own, so the first evening is a conversation rather than a form. You can create your own on Premium and above, and we explained how in creating your own AI companion, but it is an option, not the entry fee.

Eleven languages

Fellowi runs in eleven languages, the site and the chat alike: write in Polish and your companion answers in Polish. Their help centre is written in English, and their voice guide recommends English for the best experience. For someone who does not think in English late at night, that matters more than any feature on either list. More in chatting in your own language.

A studio, not only selfies

Their selfies and video selfies are about your character, and they do that well. Fellowi also runs two general purpose studios, Fellowi Images and Fellowi Video, paid in coins, for pictures and clips that have nothing to do with a companion at all.

Price, like for like

On 2026-09-25 their standard subscription bought on the web cost $13.99 a month, $37.99 for three months or $139.99 a year, and a little more through the app stores. More memory is sold as two monthly add-ons on top of it, Ultra and MAX, which they open only to users with a significant history. Extra selfie credits, character slots and voice credits are sold separately. Their prices are in US dollars, and they note that regional pricing may differ.

The fair comparison is a month of unlimited chat against a month of unlimited chat, with pictures counted separately on both sides. Our plans are in euros, and the current figures are on the Fellowi product facts page, which reads them from the code that charges them, so we will not retype them here.

What we could not compare

The writing itself. Which one sounds more like a person, remembers your sister's name, stays in character on a bad day: none of that is on a pricing page, and a comparison written by one side cannot settle it. Try both for an evening. That is the only honest test.

So which one

  • You want to hear a voice or make a call. Them.
  • You want an app from the store, or free chat with no end date. Them.
  • You want to build a character from nothing, in depth. Probably them.
  • You want to talk to someone tonight without writing them first. Us.
  • You would rather not do it in English. Us.
  • You also want pictures and clips that are not about a companion. Us.

We have written the same kind of comparison about Replika and Nomi.ai. And if a gallery sounds like your kind of front door, it is here.

Questions this post answers

What does Kindroid do better than Fellowi?

Voice: they offer voice messages, voice and video calls and custom voices, and Fellowi has no voice feature at all. They also have iOS and Android apps and a free tier with unlimited messages on a smaller model, while Fellowi is a website with a limited free trial.

How do Kindroid and Fellowi prices compare?

On 2026-09-25 their standard subscription bought on the web cost $13.99 a month, with extra memory sold as monthly add-ons on top. Fellowi's current prices, in euros, are on the product facts page, which reads them from the code that charges them.

Can I build my own companion on Fellowi the way I do on Kindroid?

Yes, on Premium and above you can create your own companion, but most people start from a ready-made one in the gallery. If writing a character from nothing is the part you enjoy, their building tools go deeper than ours.
