Chatting in Your Language: EN, RU, and UK Companions

By The Fellowi Team · · 6 min read

Evening balcony with phone in hand, city lights bokeh, and warm golden-violet lighting.

A companion should feel natural in the language you think in - not like a translation layer you tolerate. Fellowi is built in English, Russian, and Ukrainian end to end: the site, the onboarding questionnaire overlays, legal pages, blog, and the default language your companion uses when they reply. Here is how that works and when it helps most.

Language follows your settings

On your first visit, we guess a sensible default from your browser’s language preferences. You can switch anytime with the globe control in the header; the choice is stored in a cookie so it persists. If you are signed in, we also save your preferred language to your profile.

That locale is not cosmetic. It drives UI copy, blog posts, and - importantly - the language your companion is instructed to use by default in chat. You should not have to write “please answer in Russian” at the start of every session.

Everyday use cases

English

Default for international users: rehearsing interviews, late-night wind-down chats, hobby talk, or practice for difficult conversations in the language you will actually have them in.

Russian

For users who live, work, or emote more easily in Russian - everyday companionship, reflection after a hard day, or gentle conversation without code-switching fatigue.

Ukrainian

Full Ukrainian UI and companion replies for users who want the product to meet them where they are - not as an afterthought bolted onto an English-only core.

Practice vs companionship

This is different from learning a language by chatting. Language-learning posts focus on drills, mistakes, and building skill. Multilingual Fellowi is for people who already have a language and want a companion who speaks it fluently and warmly - not a tutor grading your grammar.

Of course the two can overlap: chatting in a second language you are studying is still good practice. Just know what you are optimizing for - fluency training or emotional ease.

Switching mid-journey

Changed the globe to another locale? Refresh and the site re-renders in that language. Your companion will follow the new default on the next messages. Memories from prior chats can still inform context; see how memory works if you want continuity without surprise language flips you did not ask for.

Warmth without stereotypes

Locale affects language, not a bundle of clichés. Companions are individuals shaped by your questionnaire - not national caricatures. We aim for cultural warmth and natural phrasing, not costume-party “authenticity.”
