A Runway Alternative for Short AI Video: Pay Per Clip, Not Per Month
By The Fellowi Team · · 8 min read

Runway is the name most people meet first when they start taking AI video seriously, and it has earned that. It is a studio rather than a button: video and image models, sound, upscaling, projects, apps for the phone. This post answers a narrower question. If what you need is a handful of short clips, a few seconds each, now and then, is a monthly Runway plan the right way to pay for them, or is a wallet you top up per clip? We put the two price lists side by side and did the division.
Everything about Runway below was read on their pricing page and in their terms of use on 28 September 2026. They price in US dollars and we sell in euros. We have not converted one into the other, because an exchange rate would add a number that moves every day. If their page says something different by the time you read this, their page is right.
How Runway charges, as of 28 September
Credits, on a monthly plan. Free is 125 one-time credits that do not expire, with a selection of models to try. Standard is $15 a month for 625 credits, Pro $35 for 2,250, and Max $95 for 9,500; billed yearly, the same plans come to $12, $28 and $76 a month. Their flagship video model costs 12 credits per second, so a 5-second clip is 60 credits, and Standard buys about 52 seconds of it a month.
The rules matter more than the list. On Standard and Pro, monthly credits do not roll over: they reset within 24 hours of the billing date. On Max, up to one month of unused credits carries over. Extra credits you buy never expire, with a minimum purchase of 1,000 credits; the pricing page lists anytime top-ups among the Pro features but does not print what a top-up credit costs, so we leave that number out rather than guess. Under their terms, fees are non-refundable and cancelling does not refund the rest of the period. The same terms do not restrict commercial use of what you generate.
How we charge
The Fellowi studio has no plan. You buy coins in packages, and every clip in the video studio costs a fixed number of them, set by the model, the resolution and the length. The current list is on the product page, which is built from the code that charges, and the figures below come from that same code rather than from anyone's typing. Bigger packages carry more bonus coins, so the price per coin falls as the package grows. Coins do not expire. A generation that fails on our side refunds its coins in full, without a ticket (what a failed generation costs you), and commercial use comes with every purchase (the commercial-use clause).
One 5-second clip, priced both ways
Their pricing page does not say at what resolution the flagship model renders, so we price ours at both resolutions our turbo model offers: 630 coins at 720p and 750 at 1080p, without sound. Read the lines as close rather than identical; two different models make two different clips.
- Runway Standard, credits used in full: $1.44 billed monthly, $1.15 billed yearly.
- Runway Pro: $0.93 monthly, $0.75 yearly.
- Runway Max: $0.60 monthly, $0.48 yearly.
- Fellowi at 720p: €3.77 at the Starter package rate, €1.94 at Creator, €1.55 at Scale.
- Fellowi at 1080p: €4.49, €2.31 and €1.85 at the same three rates.
Read plainly: a Runway subscriber who spends the plan pays less per clip than we charge, on every plan they sell, and the bigger the plan, the wider the gap. We are not going to argue with arithmetic. Our smallest package on its own does not hold enough coins for one such clip; it is sized for pictures.
What your month looks like
- You spend the plan every month. Take the plan. Standard makes about 10 such clips a month, Pro about 37 and Max about 158, and no coin package of ours matches that rate.
- 3 clips this month, none next month. On Standard those clips use 180 credits and the other 445 reset at the next billing date, so each clip really cost $5.00, and the plan bills again unless you cancel. The same clips at 720p with coins come to €5.81 at the Creator rate. You pay for the whole package (€9.99) up front, but what is left in it stays in your wallet for next time.
- 20 clips once, for one project. Standard does not stretch that far, so one month of Pro ($35, about 37 clips) and a cancellation is the cheaper route; the same 20 clips with coins come to about €38.73. Our only advantage there is that there is nothing to remember to cancel.
What Runway does better
- Price per clip on a used plan, as the list above shows.
- A whole studio around the clip. 4K upscaling, music, voice and sound-effect generation, custom voice clones and brand kits on the higher plans, and an assistant that works across all of it. We make the clip, with an optional soundtrack (video with sound), and stop there: no editor, no upscaler.
- Somewhere to keep the work. Every plan comes with projects and asset storage, from 5 GB on Free to 500 GB on Max. We keep finished files for a limited time only.
- Throughput. Paid plans run 5 to 20 generations in parallel, which matters when you are iterating on one shot.
- Range and reach. Models from several makers under one account, phone apps, team and enterprise plans, and on Max, studio formats such as HDR and ProRes.
- A pricing page that budgets for you. It prints how many seconds or videos each plan buys on each model. That is the right way to show a credit price.
What we do differently
- No plan and no reset.Coins stay until you spend them. Runway's extra credits never expire either, which is fair to say; the difference is that their page presents them as a top-up on top of a plan, and does not show their price.
- Failures refunded automatically. The pages we read on their site do not say what happens to credits spent on a generation that fails.
- Adult content for verified adults.Runway's terms say content posted there may not contain nudity or sexually explicit material. Ours allow adult content for verified adults, with hard refusals for anything involving minors or non-consent.
- Priced in euros. For a buyer in Europe, the price on the page is the price on the card statement, with no conversion in between.
On commercial use we are level: their terms do not restrict commercial use of outputs, and ours comes with every purchase.
The limits of both
Ours first. A clip costs more with us than with a Runway subscriber who spends the plan. We are one studio page, not a suite: no editing, no upscaling, no project folders. Finished files are deleted after a retention period (it is on the product page), so download what you keep. Filters screen prompts before they run, but nobody reviews the finished file. Theirs: monthly credits that reset on Standard and Pro, fees that are not refunded, a top-up price the pricing page does not show, no adult content, and dollar prices that a European buyer pays through a card's exchange rate. For what clips cost across the market, see how much AI video costs; for the same comparison against another subscription, the Pika alternative post; and if you are still choosing between a prompt and a start frame, text-to-video vs image-to-video.
Which one, then
If video is a weekly habit, or you need the editing, sound and storage around it, Runway's plan is the better tool and the better price, and we would tell a friend the same. If your clips come in bursts, a few for a post and a few for a project, the credits you would let reset are the whole difference, and a wallet that does not reset is the cheaper habit. Open the video studio, price one clip, and decide with the number in front of you.
Questions this post answers
Is Fellowi cheaper than Runway for short AI video?
Not per clip if you spend a Runway plan every month: on the prices both sides published on 28 September 2026, a five-second clip on their flagship model costs less on every Runway plan than a comparable clip costs with us. Fellowi comes out ahead only when you would otherwise pay for credits that reset unused, because coins do not reset or expire.
What does Runway do better than Fellowi?
Price per clip on a fully used plan, and everything around the clip: upscaling, music, voice and sound effects, projects and storage, parallel generations, phone apps and team plans. Fellowi is a studio for making the clip itself, with no editor and no upscaler.
Do Runway credits roll over to the next month?
Not on Standard or Pro: their pricing page, checked on 28 September 2026, says monthly credits reset within 24 hours of the billing date. Max carries up to one month of unused credits forward, and extra credits you buy never expire; Fellowi coins do not expire either.

Three questions decide it: how many clips you make a month, whether that number holds, and what you need the clips to be allowed to show. Both price lists, read the same day, answer all three.
