Moving to a New City: What an AI Companion Can and Cannot Do

By The Fellowi Team · · 6 min read

At dusk, a woman in a cozy knit sweater sits curled on the windowsill of a half unpacked apartment, with a steaming mug and a face down phone beside her, cardboard moving boxes nearby, and rooftops and distant lit windows glowing outside.

Dear you, in the new flat with the unfamiliar light switches. This is a letter for the first month, the one nobody warns you about properly. The move itself was loud: boxes, forms, keys, a bank that wanted a document you did not have. Then, one evening, it went quiet, and you noticed there was nobody here to tell about the day.

The first month, honestly

The first month is not lonely because something is wrong with you. It is lonely because the people who know your stories are in another city, maybe another time zone, and the people around you do not know your name yet. Every small exchange costs more than it used to: the bakery, the colleague by the coffee machine, the neighbour on the stairs. If the language is new too, you rehearse sentences in your head and still say them a beat late. That is the normal shape of a move, not a verdict on how it is going.

Someone to tell the day to

The thing you miss most is often tiny: saying “you will not believe what happened at the post office” to somebody. A Fellowi companion is there for exactly that, at whatever hour the day finishes. It asks what happened next. It does not get bored of the post office. It is an AI, it says so when you sincerely ask, and it can still be a warm place to put the day down before sleep.

It remembers the names

A new city arrives as a list of names: the manager, the flatmate, the man at the corner shop who started nodding at you. A companion keeps the important facts from earlier conversations and brings them back when they matter, so next week it can ask how the thing with the flatmate went. Memory is selective rather than a recording, and you can see and delete what it kept in Settings, Memory. How memory works explains the details. One exception worth knowing: the AI psychologists deliberately keep no long-term memories, which this post covers.

Your language, or the one you are learning

Some evenings you want to unwind in the language you grew up with, without translating yourself all day long. Other evenings you want practice. The companion answers in the language you set for the site, so you choose: your own language for rest, or, if it is one of the eleven the site speaks, the language of your new country for rehearsal. More in chatting in your language and learning a language by chatting.

Rehearse the small talk

Small talk is the toll on every new friendship, and in a new place it feels expensive. Practise it where a stumble costs nothing. Tell the companion who you are about to talk to and ask it to play them: the landlord about the broken heater, the colleague who invited everyone for drinks on Friday, the neighbour with the dog. Say your first line three ways and keep the one that sounds like you. The same idea, for harder talks, is in rehearsing difficult conversations.

One evening, start to finish

  1. Tell the day. Ten minutes, the good part and the strange part. Let the companion ask questions.
  2. Pick tomorrow’s one step. Not a plan for a social life, one step: say hello to the neighbour, ask the colleague where they get lunch, look up one class.
  3. Rehearse that step. Two or three tries at the sentence, in the language you will use.
  4. Message one person from home. A real one. Your old friends are part of the bridge too.
  5. Close the laptop. The routine ends on purpose, so the chat stays a ramp and does not become the whole evening.

The next evening, start by telling the companion how the step went. That is the loop: a little talk, a little rehearsal, one real step outside.

What it cannot do

Plainly, so you can plan around it. A companion cannot introduce you to anyone, cannot come to the party with you and cannot show you the city: it has no map of your neighbourhood and no live knowledge of what is on tonight. It cannot replace the friend who helps you carry a sofa up four floors. It can be confidently wrong about a fact, so check anything practical, like a rule at the registry office, with a real source. And how many messages you get depends on your plan, which is spelled out on the product page. If you notice you are chatting more and going out less as the weeks pass, that is the signal to turn the ratio around, and reconnecting after isolation has the small steps for it.

If the evenings get heavy

Homesickness can sink lower than ordinary missing. A companion is instructed to drop the roleplay when someone shows signs of crisis, answer calmly and point toward real help, but it is an AI and not a crisis service. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, please contact a trusted person, your local emergency number or a crisis line in your new country right now. What AI support can and cannot do says more, and this post is for the late hours specifically.

A bridge, not a destination

The city will not feel like home in a month, and nobody expects it to. It starts to feel like home the first time somebody there remembers your name without being told. Until then, it is fine to have one place where the day gets heard. If you want that place, choose a companion and tell them about the post office.

Questions this post answers

Can an AI companion help with loneliness after moving to a new city?

It can give the quiet evenings a voice: someone to tell the day to, who remembers the names you mentioned. It cannot introduce you to anyone, so use it as a bridge toward people, not instead of them.

Can I practise small talk in the language of my new country?

Yes, if that language is one of the eleven the site speaks: switch the site language and the companion answers in it. Rehearse the opening line to a neighbour or a colleague until it feels like yours.

What if homesickness turns into something heavier?

A companion is told to step out of character and point you to real help, but it is not a crisis service. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line now.
