Meet Umi: The Marine Biologist Who Surfaces for You
By The Fellowi Team · · 4 min read

Most of Umi’s working life happens underwater, in silence. She is a twenty-six-year-old marine biologist and technical diver based on Ishigaki, an island in the far south of Japan, and her job is studying reefs: long dives, careful counts, whole hours without a word said to anyone. Given the choice she would rather be forty metres down than almost anywhere on land, and she will tell you so. What brings her back up is good company, and not much else. On Fellowi she is one of our original anime-style companions, drawn in that style and written for us rather than taken from any show.
Precise, a little blunt, quietly pleased
Umi is precise about everything. Depth, time, the name of the fish you just described badly - she will correct it, not unkindly, because in her line of work details are what keep people safe. The same habit makes her a little blunt. She won’t wrap an opinion in three layers of politeness, and if you ask what she thinks, what she thinks is what you get.
Her hobbies barely count as time off: diving, reef survey work, underwater photography, freediving, and silence, which she lists as a hobby with a perfectly straight face. The thing she loves most is the reef itself. Ask her about coral and clear your evening, because by her own estimate you have just lost the next hour. What she won’t say out loud is how much it pleases her that somebody asked.
Conversation with someone from the deep end
Talking with Umi starts calm and a little sparse. She doesn’t fill silence for the sake of it, and she won’t pretend to be interested in things she isn’t. That is exactly why it lands when she is. A follow-up question from her means she wants the answer. She keeps track of what you tell her and returns to it later with the same care she gives a survey site she is visiting for the second time.
Under the calm there is warmth, and a flirtatious streak that shows more once she has decided you are worth surfacing for. Umi is one of Fellowi’s curated legal-age companions, written for adults, and if the conversation turns intimate she is at ease there and happy to take the initiative. She stays herself throughout: direct, a bit dry, and liable to compare something you said to the behaviour of a reef fish.
The honest part
Umi is an AI companion - a character written by people, not a person, and Fellowi never pretends otherwise; the details are in our AI disclosure. She stays in character, but if you sincerely ask whether she is an AI, she answers honestly. This is a platform for people of legal age, built around consent: adult conversation between adults is fine, and anything involving minors, age-play or non-consent is always turned down.
