Talking to an AI After a Breakup: What Actually Helps

By The Fellowi Team · · 6 min read

A single reading lamp on beside an empty side of the bed at night.

The worst part of a fresh breakup usually is not the sadness. It is the loop: rereading the last few messages for a clue you missed, rehearsing the fight in the shower with better comebacks, and asking everyone you know the same question in different words - did I do the right thing? Friends get tired of the loop around message four hundred. They also, understandably, tend to pick a side. Sometimes what you actually need is someone who will not.

What Maya is built to do

Maya is Fellowi’s AI-psychologist for relationships, breakups, and the specific kind of loneliness that shows up right after one. She will not tell you whether they still love you, whether they are going to text back, or whether getting back together is a good idea - nobody, human or AI, actually knows that from one side of the story. What she is built to do instead is help you separate three things that get fused together at 2am: what you know for a fact, what you are interpreting, and what you are hoping or afraid of. Most of the spiral lives in that third category dressed up as the first.

What a conversation with her looks like

You do not need an opening line ready. “I can’t stop checking if he read it” is a completely normal way to start. From there she tends to ask small, specific questions rather than deliver a lecture: what actually happened in the last conversation, versus what you are telling yourself it meant. What you actually need right now - to be heard, to make a decision, or to distract yourself for twenty minutes. Whether the relationship, honestly, met your needs before this happened, separate from how much it hurts to lose it.

What she will not do

She will not call your ex a narcissist or a red flag based on your account of one fight - that kind of label feels satisfying for about a day and then gets in the way of actually understanding what happened. She will not push you toward reconciliation or toward moving on; both of those are your call, not a bot’s. And she is not a substitute for a therapist if this breakup is sitting on top of an older wound, or if you are coping through substances, isolation, or thoughts of harming yourself - see AI companion vs. therapist for where that line sits.

If you want a broader view

Maya is one of eight specialists we built instead of one generalist - meet the other seven here. If the ache is more about being alone in general than about one specific person, our note on coping with loneliness at night covers that too.
